Jackass Letters

i’m a professional, don’t try this at home….

My jackassletters.com site got a little write up over on the metafilter users’ blogs site.

I expect great things will happen now!

I spend a bit too much time on metafilter. $5 seems to keep out most of the jackasses (somehow I keep getting to stay though), and it’s a fun place to get questions answered, find cool things on the internet, and to figure out how dumb you are. There’s a lot of smart people on there (again, somehow I get to stay). It was nice getting the write up.

I really want to redesign the jackass site, get more letters out the door, and get more letters online. I’d really like to try to promote it (sky writing, ad buys, dancing girls) and see where it can go, but honestly, I kind of thought it would have been shut down by now. I can’t afford to fight a lawsuit, so am just lucky I haven’t gotten one yet. Who knows, maybe if this ever did happen the EFF would take my case, the ACLU would raise a stink, and Al Sharpton would organize marching in the streets. This could be the best promotion ever!

Anyway, it was a nice write-up and if you haven’t checked out metafilter or my jackassletters you really should. You’re life isn’t complete until you have (and we should all strive for a complete life)!

iPhone

so tiny, so small…

Kinda funny tring to type one character at a time in a tiny little text field. I’m sure the CMS I use isn’t optimized for the iPhone, and the autocorrect is messing up as much as it catches.

Still cool posting from the bus!

Sites

social networking, online journals, and stupid sites….

I won’t say I’ve run out of steam on my jackassletters site, or that I’ve given up posting here on a regular basis, or that I’ve grown bored with designing sites, or even that I’ve given up on various ideas. I will say my level of enthusiasm is waning. I have my hands in too many projects to do any of them well. I’m the worst at this, but people often have no idea what goes into creating a site or maintaining one.

Every time I set up a site I feel like I am learning everything over again. Actually, I learn new things that make things better/easier, but then I want to apply this across the sites I already control, and I control too many. What starts out as something fun and easy, ends up being a major project. This is why I am putting my jackassletters site in hiatus.

I also maybe made a mistake by joining twitter and facebook, since the last thing I really need is more places I don’t update.

I have been playing with video recently, but mostly just being stupid.

Sometimes I think about deleting all my sites, letting the URLs go away, and reclaiming the time for other things. You know, like watching TV or reading.

No Updates

hiatus, halitosis, and other teh things…

me up closeI haven’t been updating here for a while. Partly because I am lazy, partly because I have been working on other things.

I may have written about this before, but I registered a domain, created a website around it, and put it up for sale on eBay. Obambarded.com is for sale! Throw in a bid if you feel like it!

For kicks and giggles, I also made an Obama widget. My first widget. I am still working on it. You can download it here:

Free Barack Obama facts widget for OS X.4.

Clicking the little Barack there should get you the 0.01 version of the widget.

Barack Widget (In Progress)

Once the auction ends, I will be on to other things. So don’t expect daily updates. Just thought I should say what I’ve been doing!

obambarded.com

close up of my faceGot an extra $11,999.98 laying around? Then I have a deal for you!

obambarded.com is up for sale!

Ever have a million-dollar idea? In the right hands obambarded.com might make a million, but I know those hands aren’t mine. So I’m selling it. Apparently I’m only capable of 12-thousand-dollar ideas (we’ll see. It might be a twelve dollar idea).

Last weekend right-wing pundits were using the term “Obambarded” to denote Barack Obama fatigue. After about the third or fourth time I heard it I jumped online and registered the word as a domain.

I’m now selling it. This was my intention from the beginning.

I am including obombarded.com in the deal if it goes to auction, but right now it’s $1,999.99 of my 12k idea.

Do I actually expect to get $12k for the site? No, not really. I’ll be happy to get my domain registration and hosting setup fees back. I’m more interested in the whole process and to see what will become of the site once I’ve washed my hands of it.

And sure, if I happen to get some cool cash out of the whole thing that would be great as well. But as far as get-rich-quick schemes, well, I don’t expect to retire from the proceeds from this one.

What intrigued me about this word is that it’s really non-partisan. I can see it as a negative, but just like “swift boated,” I can see people using it to attack. “McCain will be so Obambarded!”

Suggestions on “punching up” the body copy would be helpful. I try to be funny, but have to stress the try part. Any other comments/criticisms/suggestions are also welcome. I have thick skin, so personal attacks are fine!

I have a limited amount of time before I put obambarded.com up for sale, and I am not a designer, so suggestions to this end or towards features and such probably won’t be implemented. I am considering adding a comments section to the bottom, but beyond this I am not sure I see the point of rolling out a blog with forums, and galleries, and all the usual web 2.0 drivel for a site I will hopefully be parting with in two weeks (for lots of cash!).

There will be cheesy graphics and such added as I get them done, but right now the entire site consists of five files: The main page, the CSS, and three graphics.

I think it’s a cool idea and a fun project. I don’t see it making any political difference. If the site has a good eight-year run while Obama’s in office I will count this experience as a win-win (even if I lose money)!

I get ideas for domain names a lot. I’ve never tried to sell one before. So feedback from those who have is also welcome.
