Blogging and Social Networking

i am not a blogger…

small close up of my face I hate the term blogging. From Wikipedia:

The term “weblog” was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. The short form, “blog,” was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May of 1999. This was quickly adopted as both a noun and verb (“to blog,” meaning “to edit one’s weblog or to post to one’s weblog”).

I’d like to punch both these guys. But then I feel the same way about Phil Helmouth (and yes, I know I spelled his name incorrectly, thus the pun). Anyway, back to my blo— er, I mean journaling. The reason I hate the “B Word” is it takes away any credibility people writing online have and reduces them to the same level as any myspace or facebook teenaged emo kid (and no, I am not linking to either of these sites). Blogging as a term lacks substance and sophistication, so on second thought, maybe it’s perfect.

But some people strive for more. I’m not saying what I am doing is any kind of high art, and honestly this site is mostly for me. This is one of the reason I prefer to call it journaling, but then I don’t get a lot of what the kids are doing these days. I think I am a bit too old for txt messaging and social network sites and blogging. stupid animated gifI remember a day when an under construction animated gif was the highpoint of internet technology (that google search comes up with almost 900 pages with that term). Everyone had one of these clever little icons on their pages, until some jackass realized that there was probably never going to be an internet site that was done! But I digress.

I just don’t get some of this stuff. A woman in a bar once asked me to be her myspace friend. Really. She could have just asked me to buy her a drink. I’m not sure, but I think that’s how those things are usually done. Now, I don’t even have a myspace page and have never been to facebook. My idea of a social network is actual friends. But that’s just me. And people my age with these type of accounts are just plain creepy. I’ve heard them called stalkerplace and stalkerbook, and seldom does a month go by where you don’t read some story about some guy ging some place to meet some cop who pretended to be some 14 year old on some internet site.

Oh, and in my day, when kids were bullied in real life, they got an older brother to beat up the bully. Now days they shoot up schools or commit suicide because someone was mean to them online! Yeah, I just don’t get it, so if it’s all the same to you, I’ll just journal, and leave the blogging to the cool kids.
